Valley Designs undertook a captivating remodel of a powder bath in Park City, aiming to create a truly remarkable and ambient space. The design centered around the exquisite Silver Onyx material, known for its inherent beauty and ability to transform when illuminated.
A key element of this project was the innovative use of backlit Silver Onyx for the countertops. This technique was chosen to enhance the natural veining and depth of the stone, allowing light to play a crucial role in shaping the room's atmosphere. The mitered edges of the onyx further contributed to a seamless and sophisticated finish. The goal was to elevate the powder bath from simply lovely to stunning, by leveraging the transformative power of light on stone.

Onyx is an excellent choice for bathroom countertops when properly sealed and maintained. Its unique veining, translucency, and rich color variations make it one of the most visually stunning natural stones available. Because bathrooms typically see less heavy-duty use than kitchens, onyx is well-suited for the space, offering a luxurious, high-end aesthetic without the wear concerns it might face elsewhere.
Onyx is a softer, more porous stone than granite or quartzite, so regular sealing is essential to protect it from moisture, soap, and staining. For daily care, use a pH-neutral cleaner and avoid harsh or acidic products like vinegar or bleach. Wiping up spills promptly and resealing the surface once or twice a year will keep your onyx looking beautiful for years to come.
Yes, backlighting is one of the most popular ways to showcase onyx in a bathroom. Because onyx is naturally translucent, light passes through the stone and illuminates its veining and depth in a way no other material can replicate. This technique is commonly used on countertops, vanity panels, and accent walls, creating a warm, ambient glow that elevates the overall atmosphere of the space.
